Calamity Jane at the Regent Theatre, starring Carrie Hope Fletcher, delivers an engaging mix of Wild West spectacle, buoyant music, and honest-hearted performances.
It was in 1992 during a school production that I was first introduced to the stage version of Calamity Jane where I played Joe 'with the fancy clothes'. The music and script came flooding back. It was nice to reminisce whilst enjoying the night.

Onto this production and the ever talented Carrie Hope Fletcher strides confidently into Jane’s gunslinging outfit with tomboy swagger, charm, and surprising vulnerability. Her vocals are second to none especially in “The Deadwood Stage” and “Secret Love,” though occasionally the score doesn't fully spotlight her powerhouse talent – yet she makes the most of every spotlighted moment.

Vinny Coyle brings added charisma as Wild Bill Hickok; their (with Calamity) playful rivalry in “I Can Do Without You” keeps things light and lively.

The supporting cast, including folk‑infused moments by actor‑musicians, lively hoedowns, and spirited ensemble work, inject a dynamic approach into the production’s energy. Under Nikolai Foster and Nick Winston, the show brims with plenty of rhythm and spectacle – from Jane’s ride atop a piano-stagecoach to agile choreography – though certain spacious cues underutilise the stage scale.
We loved the sepia-tinged set and orchestrations which transported us and the audience to dusty saloons and prairie skylines. The lighting effects alternates between rustic warmth and emotional luminosity, contributing to memorable moments like “Secret Love”.
Songs like “Men!” and “Careless With the Truth” add the comedic color and explore Jane’s resistance to conformity – though their impact can feel lightweight and unresolved.

The production delivers joy: rousing hoedowns and catchy harmonies.
Calamity Jane at the Regent is a thoroughly entertaining evening, thanks to Fletcher’s dynamic portrayal, a tight ensemble, and top-tier staging and music throughout. A lively, whip-cracking adventure, though occasionally nibbling at modern complexities without diving in.
