As we continue in our centenary year as Stoke on Trent received city status 100 years ago to the date, we were invited by the New Vic to review Whatever Happened to Phoebe Salt.
With a bit of an introduction, the play, a heartfelt tribute to Stoke-on-Trent’s own Arthur Berry, the New Vic Theatre presents the world premiere of Whatever Happened to Phoebe Salt, a long-shelved play now brought to life as part of the Arthur Berry centenary celebrations. Set in 1950s Burslem, the play captures the aspirations and constraints of working-class life through the eyes of its spirited protagonist, Phoebe Salt.

With a cast mainly made up of actors from this great place, the lead and star of the show, Isabella Rossi, in her professional debut, delivers a vibrant performance as Phoebe, a young woman yearning to escape the monotony of her job at the meat market for the allure of longing to be on stage (which at some point probably resonated with Isabella herself). Rossi's portrayal infuses the character with energy and determination, standing out amidst the play's ensemble. As the play unfolds we meet various Stokie characters, who are charming, hard working, gritted and determined typical of the great people from our humble city.

Director Abbey Wright's production is noted for its evocative setting and attention to period detail, effectively immersing the audience in the era's atmosphere. We feel she captured it greatly and we felt like we were transported back to 50's or so Burslem.
The play resonated with us, offering a nostalgic glimpse into Stoke's history and culture. The production's commitment to authenticity, including the use of local actors with accents and dialects was refreshing to see, because lets face it, the Stoke accent is one of the hardest to copy, so to have authentic actors from these parts added depth to the story telling. It was also lovely to see New Vic favourite Andrew Pollard treading the New Vic theatre boards once again.

The five star show Whatever Happened to Phoebe Salt runs at the New Vic Theatre until June 21. For those interested in exploring a piece of rediscovered local theatre history, this production offers a poignant and engaging experience. For tickets contact the box office on 01782 717962.
